Implements required by a *villein to carry out his work; also the wagons and team of an estate. When a man was amerced, the amount was judged according to his station but his wainage was exempt from confiscation. *Bracton compared the villein's wainage with a merchant's merchandise, which was also exempt from amercement. This was intended to ensure that a man could still earn a living after punishment. [< AngLat. wainagium]
